A great day of tennis, thanks and giving!

The 3rd Annual Rally for the Cure at Harbor Bay Club, held last Sunday, raised $11,370 for Susan G. Komen, and $2,320 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, for a grand total of $13,690 raised this year!

Thanks to everyone – tennis pros, guests, spectators, sponsors, auction donors and bidders, and vendors – for all of their generosity and support! A special shout out goes to Chris Aria for organizing the event! “I truly enjoy organizing this event, and being an ambassador for both Susan G. Komen and St. Jude. I love the Harbor Bay Club community, and I plan on continuing to give back as much as I can. I look forward to doing this again next year, with your support!” ~ Chris Aria

The event began with everyone showing up dressed in pink, and eager to play tennis. We began with a welcome address on Court 1, as I spoke about the importance of mindfulness, gratefulness, and hopefulness as we face cancer. In addition, breast cancer survivor Seeka Yang spoke about her experience battling the disease. The Mayor of Alameda, Trish Spencer, then spoke about her breast cancer experience as a nine year survivor. Finally, Mike Bauer advocated for St. Jude Children’s hospital and spoke about his experience visiting the facilities.

Next came the pro-am. 19 matches were played with pink tennis balls. It was a fun mix of players of various levels, and a unique experience for all involved. Thank you to all the pros who donated all their time and efforts!

After the pro-am and raffle, good food and drink was had by all. The grill was going with burgers and hot dogs, and the event was catered by Hang Ten Boiler. In addition, Shirley Sutherland prepared a delicious array of foods.

Throughout the day, the silent auction was open and many bids were made on all of the items! Thank you to all of our silent auction donors and bidders! Every item sold!

Finally, came the exhibition match! Megan and I took on Mike Bauer and Olga Bulycheva in an epic contest. We truly enjoyed playing in front of everyone, and were excited that we could produce some entertaining tennis! It was a high level of mixed doubles.

The day ended on a beautiful note with former American Idol, the lovely Megan Heneghan, singing Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway” acapella. It was a fitting end to a beautiful day.
